Timeline of the Omar Radi case

  • April 18, 2019: Omar Radi is summoned to the Brigade Nationale de Police Judiciaire (BNPJ) for a tweet criticizing the heavy sentences against Rif activists.

  • December 25, 2019: Omar Radi is taken into custody over the tweet.

  • December 31, 2019: Omar Radi is released following a national and international mobilization.

  • March 17, 2020: Omar Radi is given a four-month suspended prison sentence in the same case.

  • April 7, 2020: Following his support for journalist Souleiman Raissouni, Omar Radi is the target of a smear campaign by media outlets close to the Moroccan security services.

  • June 14, 2020: Omar Radi is accused by the same press of doing intelligence on behalf of foreign countries.

  • June 22, 2020: Amnesty International publishes an investigation that claims that Omar Radi’s mobile phone was attacked via the Pegasus software developed by the Israeli group NSO.

  • June 25, 2020: The Prosecutor General of the Casablanca Court of Appeal opens an investigation into the journalist’s alleged involvement in a case of obtaining foreign funding in connection with intelligence services.

  •  June 25, 2020: Omar Radi’s first summons to BNPJ headquarters.

  • July 2, 2020: A Moroccan government press conference violates the secrecy of the investigation by revealing that a journalist was the subject of a judicial investigation for “alleged breach of state security” and “links with a liaison officer of a foreign country”.

  •  July 2, 2020: Second summons of Omar Radi to BNPJ headquarters.

  • July 5, 2020: Arrest of Omar Radi and his colleague Imad Stitou outside a restaurant in Casablanca following an altercation with an employee of the Chouf TV website.
